Volunteer Service Trips
Common Questions:
Why volunteer with Dove Missions?
Dove Missions offers a unique opportunity for you to co-create your own mission experience. We work with you to create a custom itinerary that will match your interests and skills with the people and projects that need them.
How much does it cost to volunteer?
The service fee is $75/person per day in the field. The family rate is $225/day. This fee is tax deductible and covers the cost of transportation to and from your hotel and the field locations, as well as the personal guidance of our field team leader. This structure allows you to serve for 1 day while on a vacation or even 1 month, whatever works best for you and your family.
Where can I stay while I am in Puerto Plata?
There are a number of accommodation options for your stay in Puerto Plata ranging from inexpensive rustic hostel type rooms to luxurious Resorts and rental villas. Here is a list of possible choices for you to consider, listed from least expensive to most luxurious. These are only suggestions to provide you a variety of options. We are not affiliated with any of these resorts, and do not guarantee the quality or service you may receive. There are many other fine resorts in the area, and we encourage you to explore your options and feel free to stay anywhere you choose in the Puerto Plata area. We will come and get you.

Will I really make a difference?
Yes, you can and will make a huge difference, but not necessarily in the way you anticipate. You may not be able to accomplish everything you hoped for, but instead will find that the 30 minutes you spend playing soccer with the street boys or the hour you spend coloring with an orphan child are the most profound moments of your entire trip.
What can I expect?
You will see some things on this trip that may shock you, living conditions that are unacceptable, and situations that aren’t fair. You will also encounter unexpected delays or changes in plans. Even with all these challenges keep in mind that everything you accomplish on this trip, and every person you connect with is a positive that would not have occurred without your involvement. You are participating in a very unpredictable, self-directed program in a developing country. Be prepared for frustration and discomfort as well as for unforgettable experiences—even miracles. There will be many things you will want to change but can’t during this trip. We encourage you to enjoy what you can do, and to let go of what you can’t do. Stay flexible, open and willing to go with the flow, and you will not only enjoy yourself more, you will also be able to bring more joy and hope to those people you serve.
Is it safe?
The safety of our program participants has always been of paramount importance to us and to the organizations we partner with in the Dominican Republic. It is important to realize that safety on your service vacation is a shared responsibility. The Dominican Republic is a truly special place. Still, this is a developing nation that does face some challenges with health care and illegal activity. Make sure you are up to date on your vaccinations (see www.cdc.gov). Use common sense. DonÂ’t use unmarked street taxis, carry only a reasonable amount of cash and only one or two credit cards, and avoid dark deserted places just like you would at home. Given these precautions, you need not worry. Remember thousands of students and community service volunteers have safely engaged in volunteer service projects in the Dominican Republic
Do I need to know how to speak Spanish?
No, you donÂ’t need to know how to speak Spanish you just need to have an open and loving heart (and a good sense of humor helps). The children are used to our Spanglish, and can understand what we are telling them even when we arenÂ’t sure what we are saying ourselves.
